2026 Abu Dhabi Open Masters Games

While searching the IOF calendar for some Trail-O WREs, I found the orienteering event at the Abu Dhabi Open Maters Games. As this was a good chance to experience a new orienteering country, I checked if had time and start planing. As the starting fee didn’t depend on the number of competitions I checked for other sports as well. Road races and obstacle course races were scheduled one week after the orienteering competitions and outside my vacation time. So I decided to enter the 5000 m track race.
First event was the orienteering middle distance at Saturday. The event takes places at a beach resort on Hudayriyat Island. The map consist of some open sandy area and the beach resort. All courses started in the open area and went then to the beach resort. Coming from German winter I was not used to run in the sun,s o it was hard to keep the speed in the more easy open part. The beach resort part was more tricky but I could finish it without big mistakes. I finished the race on 4th place but with a huge gap to the medals.
Sprint race take place the next day at the same place. Course went mainly through the beach resort were you had to look to find the right passage. It definitely helped if you run the middle distance before. Again I finished at 4th place with a huge gap to the medals.
The athletics organization was a little more chaotic, but I managed to pick my bibs and find a schedule ahead. My 5000 m race was scheduled for Monday evening. For some time I was quite sure that after 2 days of orienteering and a tourist day I wont start. But at the day itself I give it a go. Short before my start they decided to merge to classes, so my race was earlier than expected. This gives me a little hurry and not really time for warmup. The race was OK and I enjoyed my first track race. I managed to finish 6th place in my class.
It was interesting to meet not only people from different countries but also from different sports. This makes it a different experience from orienteering only events.

Gaildorfer Kocherlauf

Saturday I was on a local street race with my companies running team. In the last editions we´ve been quite good in the team ranking that counts the overall finished kilometres. So I chosen the half marathon. Just than figured out that we had small team and did not compete for the team ranking. The course is relative flat so can go faster times. Muscular issues prevent me from training very well the last weeks so I has some trouble to find the right pace. Second half becomes hard for me but also for some fellow runners so that I was able to overtake one on the last kilometre and nearly close the gap to another one. My time of 1:38:06 min was OK. Better were my results as I finished 5th overall and 3rd in M40.

Nikolauslauf Tübingen

After 3 years we decided to run the Nikolauslauf again. This was our traditional last race of the season. I was not very good in shape and thought about a time of 1:40 to 1:45 for the half marathon with more than 300 meters to climb, Steffen also wanted to run about 1:45.
The temperatures was a bit cold but with 2 degrees not the coldest Nikolauslauf we participated in. About the first 2,5k we were about the same pace and on the first bigger climb I was a bit faster than Steffen and so we lost each other and we both did our own race. The course was slightly different than the last we time participated, which resulted in less trail running. We both were faster than we expected in the beginning, Steffen finished just under 1:40 and was less than a minute slower as in 2019 and I managed to get a time of 1:33 only 2 minutes slower than 3 years ago. So we both were happy with our results.

Essinger Panoramalauf

Saturday we had the first competition this year. We started at the 3 hill run of the Essinger Panoramalauf (Essinger landscape run). A 23 k race with ~500 m climb. The event was resheduled from June last year to November last year and finally to June this year. There were some restrictions like no drinks on course but otherise it was a good competion feeling. We run the 23 K course first time so it wasn´t easy to find the right speed. Worked quite fine for Jakob and OK for me.
Jakob: 1:43:23 (12th total, 3rd M30)
Steffen: 2:09:34 (71st total, 13th M40)
